THE KIND OF MANAGERS WHO
ARE BOSSES
On a stormy night many years ago, an elderly man and his wife entered the
lobby of a small hotel in Philadelphia. " All the big hotels are filled up,"
said the man. "Could you possibly give us a room here?" The clerk explained that
there were three conventions in town, and that there were no rooms to be had anywhere.
"All our rooms are taken", he said, "but I can’t send a nice couple
like you out in the rain at one o’clock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing
to sleep in my room?" The couple replied that they couldn’t do that, but the
clerk insisted. "Don’t worry about me; I’ll make out just fine," he
told them. Next morning, as he paid his bill, the elderly man said to the clerk, "You
are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States.
Maybe someday I’ll build one for you." The clerk looked at the man and his wife
and smiled. The three had a good laugh over the old man’s little joke, and then the
clerk helped them with their bags to the street. Two years passed and the clerk had nearly
forgotten the incident when he received a letter from the man. It recalled that night and
enclosed a round trip ticket to New York, asking the young man to pay them a visit. In New
York, the old man led him to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street and pointed to a
great new building there, a palace of reddish stone, with turrets and watch towers
thrusting up into the sky. "That", said the older man, "is the hotel I have
just built for you to manage." "you must be joking," the young
man said. "I most assuredly am not," said the older man, a sly smile playing
around his mouth.
The
man’s name was William Waldorf Astor.
The hotel was the original Waldorf Astoria
and the young clerk,
who bacame its first manager, was George C.Boldt. |

Bedded Hospital, 40 Kms from Gurgaon in Haryana. The Hospital shall provide services in
Trauma and Family Medicine. It has started with 30 Beds in mid-November.
Applications are invited from Consultants for
placement in Anaesthesia, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Neuro - surgery, Orthopaedic
Surgery, Pathology, Radiology and Ultrasonology.
Applications are also invited from suitable candidates for appointment as Residents, CMO,
